The route from Collformic reaches open hillside early, with much of the climb exposed to wind and cloud. Its roughly seven kilometres there and back include more than 500 metres of ascent. Pick a clear, snow-free day and plan to descend by the same path.

Pla de la Barraca provides an early place to reassess the group. Beyond it, continue only while the weather and everyone’s pace leave a comfortable return.

| Route facts | Planning guide | |---|---| | Start | Collformic parking area on the BV-5301 | | Route | GR 5.2 toward Matagalls, returning to Collformic | | Distance | About 7.2 km return using the park’s 3.6 km outward route | | Ascent | Allow approximately 550–600 m of climbing | | Time | 3½–4½ hours including rests; longer for a slow group | | Budget | No summit admission; allow €10–20 per person for carried food and refreshments, plus transport |

The Montseny park route map identifies the Collformic–Matagalls section of GR 5.2. Information checked September 2026. Distances and ascent can vary with the exact parking place and minor path choices.

Collformic is the trailhead, not a guaranteed parking space

The park locates Collformic on the BV-5301 at kilometre 26.4. Arrive early on a fair-weather weekend and park only where permitted. A full car park is a reason to choose another outing, not to obstruct a bend or access road.

From Barcelona, treat the journey as roughly 1½–2 hours by car, depending on the approach and traffic. The final mountain road deserves its own margin. If arranging a taxi from a railway station, obtain a return booking before leaving the station; there is no assumption of a taxi rank at the pass.

This route is not step-free. Uneven ground, sustained uphill walking and exposed upper slopes make it unsuitable for someone who needs a surfaced path or frequent guaranteed seating. Anyone uncertain about the climb should choose a lower Montseny walk rather than relying on the small number of kilometres.

For the drive from Barcelona, compare city car-hire options with collection hours that allow an early start. A rental reservation does not reserve a space at Collformic.

Above the pass, settle into the climb

Follow the GR 5.2 waymarks towards Matagalls, keeping to the worn route to avoid eroding the hillside. The first climb above Collformic is a good place to settle into a steady pace before the longer open section.

Use the approach toward Pla de la Barraca as the first real assessment. The group should still be walking steadily, with enough water and no pressure to recover time. If someone is already struggling, the remaining ascent will not become easier merely because the summit appears close.

Wear footwear with grip on rock and loose earth. Carry a waterproof, a warm layer, sun protection, food, water, a charged phone and an offline map. The exposed slopes provide little shelter if the weather turns.

The open upper slope is the weather decision

Consult Meteocat for the mountain forecast and warnings before departure, then compare the actual conditions at Collformic. A pleasant temperature in Barcelona says little about the wind above the pass. Fog also changes the task from following an obvious hillside line to maintaining direction.

Turn back if fog makes the waymarks hard to follow, wind affects balance or a thunderstorm approaches. Keep the group together on the descent.

Snow or ice requires winter equipment and experience beyond this route plan. For a first visit, postpone the climb if either is present.

Keep the summit stop short enough for a comfortable descent

At the top, find a resting place that does not block the path or expose the group unnecessarily to wind. Have a drink, eat and look at the terrain you have crossed. A summit photograph takes seconds; cooling down in wet clothing can affect the entire return.

Set the latest turnaround before starting, based on the slowest walker and available daylight. For a morning start, a useful rule is to keep at least half the planned outing available for the return and interruptions. The descent is shorter in time for many walkers, but tired knees and slippery stones can reverse that expectation.

Avoid adding an unfamiliar descent to make a loop. The return to Collformic gives you a known line, known landmarks and a car or pickup in the correct place. A spontaneous change toward another trailhead produces a transport problem as well as a navigation problem.

Descend to Collformic before planning the meal

Allow 1½–2 hours for the descent as a comfortable working block, adapting to your group. Use shorter steps on loose ground and leave space between walkers. Poles can help a practised user, but they do not make poor footwear or weak visibility acceptable.

Carry enough food to finish without depending on a restaurant at the pass. If you want a sit-down lunch afterward, choose a flexible reservation in a nearby settlement rather than a fixed time that encourages rushing downhill. Budget roughly €20–30 per adult for that optional meal.

If the summit forecast is poor, spend time in El Brull instead. Do not look for a sheltered shortcut onto Matagalls’s exposed upper slopes.
